First climber ever to win 5 World championship medals in the history of sport climbing in India. First sport climber and a non mountaineer ever to be conferred with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2019 for achieving the rarest results in sport climbing. This award is at par with Arjuna Award. The only Indian climber to win more than 26 medals in World championships, representing India in a record 7 world championship since 2012. How Manikandan has braved all odds to become the World Champion Pursuing the sport at the highest international level has been a very difficult journey with meagre and sporadic financial support to cover even basic needs to keep going. Mani’s a broken income as an outdoor instructor in between competitions, could just makes home ends meet and scrape up for the international competitions and some times Govt funding, but rarely wholly covered.. He trained a couple of climbers who went on to become national champions and won medals at international events as well
